Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)
A modern, minimally invasive treatment for glaucoma that helps lower eye pressure with less risk and faster recovery than traditional surgery.
Overview
MIGS is a modern and adaptive approach to treating glaucoma with less risk, faster recovery, and enhanced comfort.
Designed specifically for patients with mild to moderate glaucoma, the procedure aims to lower eye pressure by creating a bypass to improve the drainage of excess fluid from the eye.
As a minimally invasive option, MIGS can often be performed alongside cataract surgery, making it a versatile treatment choice. It is also typically done as a day surgery, allowing you to go home the same day with minimal downtime.
Whether you’re seeking an alternative to daily eye drops or a less invasive solution, MIGS could provide an effective treatment option for managing your glaucoma effectively.
The benefits of MIGS
Quicker recovery
MIGS is a minimally invasive procedure, meaning less trauma to the eye and a faster recovery. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can return to normal activities sooner than with traditional glaucoma surgery.
Lower risk of complications
With smaller incisions and a gentler approach, MIGS reduces the risk of infection, scarring, and other complications associated with more invasive procedures.
Effective pressure control
By improving fluid drainage, MIGS effectively lowers intraocular pressure (IOP), a key factor in managing glaucoma and preventing further vision loss.
Preserves eye health
The precision of MIGS helps maintain the natural structure of the eye, reducing the risk of long-term damage while managing the condition effectively.
Minimally disruptive
MIGS is usually an outpatient procedure, meaning patients can typically go home the same day. You should be able to resume daily activities quickly, with fewer restrictions than traditional glaucoma surgery.
-
Two tiny titanium stents are carefully inserted into the trabecular meshwork to bypass the primary blockage, improving fluid drainage, and reducing intraocular pressure. The procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and often performed alongside cataract surgery for improved results.
-
An 8mm-long tube is gently implanted into the eye to aid in lowering intraocular pressure. This procedure helps reduce the need for eye drops and provides a long-term solution for managing glaucoma.

What to expect
-
Before your procedure, our expert team will carry out a thorough eye examination to evaluate the severity of your glaucoma and determine whether MIGs is the best option for you.
-
The surgery is usually carried out under local anaesthesia, so you’ll remain awake but relaxed and comfortable throughout. Depending on the type of MIGS procedure, the surgeon will either create a new drainage channel or enhance the existing drainage system to help improve fluid outflow and lower eye pressure. The whole process usually takes under an hour.
-
After the procedure, you’ll be monitored for a short time to ensure everything is progressing smoothly. You’ll then be discharged to recover comfortably at home. Post-operative care is straightforward, and our team will provide clear instructions and on-going support to ensure a smooth recovery and optimal healing.
