Gaining his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of London, Mr Patel went on to further subspecialise in Glaucoma, receiving training within the south Thames London circuit and thereafter completing a fellowship in Glaucoma at Kings Hospital and subsequently joining the fellowship programme at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Mr Patel is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

He received additional specialist training in 2019, gaining a postgraduate diploma with Distinction in cataract and refractive surgery from Ulster University, as well as a Certificate in Laser and Refractive Surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He is currently active as a substantive consultant at Kingston and Richmond Foundation Trust, where he routinely manages complex cataract and glaucoma cases.

With his extensive experience in ophthalmology, Mr Patel is the college Tutor responsible for training and development of junior ophthalmologists. He has been involved in teaching at local and regional levels on topics pertaining to Ophthalmology and regularly trains future ophthalmologists and medical students. He has presented his work at both regional and international events, including The Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ annual congress and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) in the United States.

Mr Patel has received a variety of awards and prizes for his dedication to his work. most recently, he was awarded a medical education prize and previously accepted a leadership prize by Health Education England for his efforts in reducing risks to patients that are admitted into hospital.
