Pterygium Surgery
Restore comfort and clarity with pterygium surgery, designed to remove growths and improve vision while preventing future complications.
Overview
A pterygium is a benign (non-cancerous) growth of tissue that develops on the surface of the eye, typically on the inner corner closest to the nose. It starts on the conjunctiva - the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye - and can gradually extend onto the cornea. Although it is most commonly found in the inner corner, pterygium can occasionally develop on the outer part of the eye as well.
Often referred to as “surfer’s eye”, pterygium can affect anyone but is most common amongst those who are frequently exposed to:
Sunlight
Wind
Dust
Other environmental irritants
As a result, people living in warm, sunny climates are more likely to develop the condition, as well as older adults.
Treatment options
At SEON Vision, we’re dedicated to restoring your vision with the most appropriate and minimally invasive treatment. Our approach will depend on the size and location of the pterygium, as well as your symptoms.
-
For small, no-symptomatic pterygia, eye drops or artificial tears can help alleviate dryness and discomfort, while anti-inflammatory medications reduce swelling. Lifestyle changes, such as wearing sunglasses and avoiding irritants, can also provide relief without the need for surgery.
-
If your pterygium grows, becomes uncomfortable, or affects your vision, surgery may be the most effective solution. Carried out under local anaesthesia, the procedure involves carefully removing the growth and placing a graft of healthy tissue over the area to help prevent it returning. Most patients go home the same day and experience minimal downtime.
Are you a candidate?
Many pterygia are asymptomatic, meaning they don’t cause any noticeable symptoms. However, you may experience:
Redness, irritation, or discomfort in the affected eye
Dryness or a gritty sensation - a feeling of something in the eye
Blurred vision - especially if the pterygium extends onto the cornea
Swelling or tenderness in the affected area
Excessive watering or tearing
If left untreated, a pterygium may continue to grow, leading to further irritation and potentially impacting vision. In some cases, inflammation may occur, which can lead to more serious complications.
Benefits of pterygium surgery
Enhanced comfort
Surgical removal offers lasting relief from the discomfort of redness, dryness, and the gritty feeling commonly associated with pterygium.
Preserved vision
When the pterygium encroaches on the cornea, it can lead to astigmatism or visual impairment. Surgery halts this progression, ensuring clearer vision.
Long-lasting results
With proper aftercare and a graft, surgery boasts a high success rate, significantly reducing the risk of recurrence.

What to expect
-
The approach to treating pterygium depends on its size, location, symptoms, and the impact it has on your vision. Our expert team will assess your pterygium and your vision to decide on the best course of action.
-
On the day of the procedure, pterygium removal is performed under local anaesthesia, with most patients able to go home the same day. The growth is carefully exercised, and a small graft of healthy tissue is placed over the area to promote healing and prevent recurrence. The procedure is quick and minimally invasive, offering significant relief from discomfort and vision-threatening issues.
-
At SEON Vision, we use a suture-less technique to minimise downtime and discomfort, enhancing both recovery and cosmetic results. Most patients experience a significant reduction in symptoms shortly after the surgery, with long-term improvements in comfort and appearance.
